Ordering & Sizing

How do I choose the right size?

We recommend measuring your chest, waist, and hips and comparing to our size chart. Traditional habesha garments are cut with a relaxed fit through the body — if you are between sizes, size up for the most comfortable wear. Our size chart is included on every product page, and we are happy to help over email if you are unsure.

How do I tell you my size when ordering?

Add your size (XS, S, M, L, XL) in the order notes at checkout — there is a field for this. You can also email us at support@marakiroots.com after placing your order with your order number and size.

Can I request custom sizing?

We offer custom sizing on select pieces. Email us with your measurements and which piece you are interested in — we will let you know if we can accommodate and what the timeline looks like.

Shipping

How long does shipping take?

Each piece is handmade in Ethiopia and made to order. Most orders ship within 5–7 business days. Once shipped, international delivery typically takes 7–14 business days depending on your location. We ship worldwide.

Do you ship to the US, Canada, and Europe?

Yes — we ship worldwide. Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your location.

Will I have to pay customs or import duties?

Import duties and taxes may apply depending on your country's regulations. These are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in our prices or shipping fees. Most diaspora customers in the US and Canada have not reported customs issues, but it is worth checking your local rules for goods from Ethiopia.

The Garments

Are the garments truly handmade?

Yes. Every Maraki Roots piece is made by hand in Ethiopia. The Tibeb borders are hand-woven on traditional looms — not printed or machine-applied. The tilf embroidery on our formal pieces is hand-stitched. This is real Ethiopian craft, made by skilled artisans.

What is Tibeb?

Tibeb is the decorative woven border pattern that frames traditional Ethiopian garments at the neckline, cuffs, and hem. The geometric patterns and color combinations are woven directly into the cotton fabric on the loom — they are structurally part of the cloth, not applied afterward. Different Tibeb patterns carry cultural meaning and are associated with different occasions and regions.

What is Tilf?

Tilf is hand-embroidery — the intricate stitched patterns of crosses, flowers, and geometric motifs that appear on our more formal pieces. Tilf has adorned Ethiopian ceremonial garments for centuries. The gold thread tilf on our bridal and wedding pieces is among the most skilled work in our collection.

What fabric are the garments made from?

Our habesha kemis and dresses are made from handwoven cotton — the traditional fabric of Ethiopian ceremonial dress. It is breathable, naturally textured, and gets softer with gentle care over time. Our Modern Kemis line uses a blend fabric for a more structured, everyday-wear feel.

How do I care for my garment?

Care instructions vary by piece and are listed on each product page. In general: hand wash cold or dry clean for embroidered pieces. Machine wash gentle cold for our poncho and lighter pieces. Do not tumble dry. Iron on low heat with a pressing cloth over embroidered or Tibeb areas. Store formal pieces in a breathable garment bag.
