About Us

We Are Maraki Roots

Rooted in culture. Dressed in heritage.

The Story Behind the Name

Maraki — from the Amharic word for beloved, cherished, something held close to the heart. Roots — because no matter where life takes us, we carry where we came from.

Maraki Roots was born from a simple truth: Ethiopian and Eritrean dress is some of the most beautiful clothing on earth, and the diaspora deserved a place to find it — authentic, high-quality, and delivered to their door.

Who We Make This For

For the Ethiopian woman in Washington DC who wants to show up to Timkat in a kemis that feels like home. For the Eritrean family in Toronto dressing for a wedding. For the second-generation daughter who grew up between worlds and is learning to wear both proudly. For anyone who understands that clothing is not just fabric — it is identity, memory, and belonging.

We make it for you.

The Craft

Every Maraki Roots garment begins on a traditional Ethiopian handloom. The Tibeb borders — the woven geometric patterns that frame the neckline, cuffs, and hem — are not printed or embroidered after the fact. They are woven directly into the cotton as the fabric is made, requiring artisan skill developed over years of practice.

The tilf embroidery on our more formal pieces — the gold thread crosses, rosettes, and geometric motifs — is worked by hand, stitch by stitch. No machines produce what you see on these garments. Only hands. Only skill. Only time.

That is what you are paying for. And that is why it is worth it.

Handmade in Ethiopia

Our garments are produced in Ethiopia, supporting the artisan weavers and embroiderers who have kept these traditions alive across generations. When you buy from Maraki Roots, you are not just dressing yourself — you are participating in the continuation of an art form that is thousands of years old.

For Every Occasion

We carry floor-length Habesha Kemis for weddings, Timkat, Enkutatash, and formal celebrations. We carry modern interpretations for the woman who wants to wear her heritage to work, to brunch, to everyday life. We carry relaxed ponchos for the moments in between.

Whatever the occasion — whatever the distance from home — we want you to feel rooted.
